What is biopuncture?

Biopuncture is an injection technique whereby ultra-low doses of natural, FDA-approved substances (mostly plant-derived) are injected into muscles, tendons, or ligaments to treat pain, orthopaedic injuries, or even chronic conditions like arthritis.

What’s in the injection?

A biopuncture treatment is made up of homeopathic agents, often combined with small amounts of dextrose and lidocaine. Homeopathics contain diluted natural materials, chosen specifically for their ability to detoxify, work as anti-inflammatories or muscle-relaxers, repair tissue, etc.

The actual products used will depend on the individual being treated, but these products essentially stimulate the body’s immune system to employ its own natural healing processes in the area that is injected. The treatment works with the body to actually reduce toxic buildup in the area and initiate lasting healing, instead of simply blocking a pain response.

Is it safe? Does it have side effects?

Biopuncture is very safe, because the injections don’t contain high concentrations of active substances. Only a small amount of diluted materials are used to gain the desired effect. As a result, toxic side effects are very unlikely. Additionally, the ingredients used in biopuncture are manufactured by companies that guarantee the production quality of their products. Most of the items used for injection are made in Germany and Italy and are held to very strict quality control regulations.

Clinical studies on thousands of patients have confirmed the safety of these products, and patients hardly ever experience negative side effects from biopuncture. Patients sometimes experience an increase in discomfort a day or two after their injection, but this is normal and will dissipate quickly. This “reaction phase” is actually seen as a positive signal that the body’s healing processes have been activated. Regardless, you should be able to drive yourself home from appointments and resume reasonable typical activity immediately.

What areas/conditions is this recommended for?

Neck and back pain or injuries respond especially well to biopuncture. We also treat shoulders, elbows, ankles, feet, carpal tunnel, even Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. Many patients come to us as a last resort, or in an attempt to avoid surgery, and most experience significant improvement.

Our office always requests current x-ray films of the affected area, and performs a thorough orthopaedic exam prior to recommending biopuncture for patients. For a full list of conditions that may respond to these injections, or for more information, contact our office.

Will the injections be painful?

Biopuncture uses injections which vary in depth depending on the indication. Discomfort does somewhat depend upon the depth and region being injected, and some areas are more uncomfortable than others. If patients are concerned with pain tolerance, we may recommend arriving an hour before their initial injection to have lidocaine cream applied to the region which will be injected. This helps to numb the area, so injections are not felt as much. After the first injection, patients can decide if they will need lidocaine at future appointments. Many patients are not bothered by the injections however, and opt to receive treatment without topical anesthetic.
